Who owns the wreck?
Usually, when an insurer pays out a total-loss claim, they take ownership of the wreck and sell it to a salvage auction themselves. But some insurers offer a "retain salvage" option: they pay you the agreed value minus the salvage value, and you keep the car.
If you keep the wreck
Then yes — you can absolutely sell it. Written-off cars are bought daily by wreckers and cash-for-cars services for parts and scrap. Depending on the model, a written-off late-model vehicle can still be worth $500 to several thousand dollars.
Check the write-off status
Some written-off vehicles are flagged on the NZTA register as statutory write-offs (cannot go back on the road) or repairable write-offs. Either way, wreckers buy both — the flag affects re-registration, not scrap value.
Before you sell
- Confirm with your insurer in writing that you own the salvage.
- Remove personal plates and belongings.
- Have your ID and proof of ownership ready.
Getting paid twice? No — getting paid properly
If you took the reduced payout and kept the wreck, selling it is simply collecting the salvage value your insurer deducted. Get a free quote and turn the wreck into cash.
