Cash for scrap cars in New Zealand

A scrap car is any vehicle that costs more to fix than it is worth. It still has value: steel by weight, plus whatever the wrecker can pull off it and resell. You should never pay to have a complete car taken away.

What scrap cars are worth

Scrap cars typically return $150 to $800 depending on weight, completeness and whether the engine and catalytic converter are still fitted.

Before pickup

  • A complete car — engine, gearbox, wheels and catalytic converter still fitted — is worth notably more than a stripped shell.
  • Take your plates off if you intend to keep the registration on hold.
  • The wrecker handles the change of ownership notification with Waka Kotahi.

Questions about selling a scrap car

Should I ever pay for scrap car removal?
No. For a complete vehicle in an accessible spot, towing is covered by the scrap value. Anyone charging you to take a whole car away is not giving you a fair deal.
What if the car has been stripped?
It is still bought, just at a lower figure — the price follows what is left, mostly steel weight.
Do I need a warrant or registration?
No. Neither is required to scrap a vehicle. You do need to be the registered owner or have their authority.
